About our Shelter

Moldova is a small independent country which borders Romania and the Ukraine, where there are no animal welfare laws and daily life is extremely harsh and dangerous for the many hundreds of strays on the streets. Friends of Moldavian Strays or FOMS UK, a small non profit organisation was set up in 2014 by Debbie O’Connell, a dedicated animal lover who having read about the plight of the stray and abandoned dogs and cats in Moldova, decided to do something about it. FOMS UK’s aim is to raise funds through social media to support the work of the Areal Moldavian Dog Rescue Shelter.

Finding Loving Homes

The shelter is run by an extraordinary local lady, Natalia Ghetmanet and it provides a safe haven for hundreds of dogs, puppies and a small number of cats. The shelter receive no local funding whatsoever and is run purely on donations. We help over 250 animals in our care.

Natalia, her deputy Vlad and a two dedicated staff work endless hours, often using their own money and do all they can to help these animals. For more information about us and shelter life please visit our main Facebook page for updates and photos of our lovely rescued dogs who are available for ‘virtual’ or local adoption.
